Correcting Defective Benching Inside a Manhole Chamber.

KD Drainage attended a drainage issue in West Malling where tissue was repeatedly catching within a manhole chamber.

The problem was traced to poorly installed benching inside the chamber. Rather than allowing waste to move cleanly through the drainage channel, the defective finish was creating an area where material could snag and begin to accumulate.

Our team removed the problematic arrangement and installed new benching within the chamber.

The purpose of the repair was to improve the route through the chamber and remove the feature that had been contributing to the blockage problem.

The Problem

Poor Benching Was Creating a Point Where Waste Could Catch.

Benching forms the sloped surface around the drainage channel inside a manhole chamber.

When it is formed correctly, it helps guide wastewater towards the channel and avoids leaving unnecessary ledges or irregular surfaces around the flow path.

At West Malling, the existing benching had been installed badly enough for tissue to catch rather than pass cleanly through the chamber.

That meant the blockage problem was not simply about clearing accumulated waste — the underlying chamber detail also needed correcting.

Our Solution

New Benching Installed to Improve Flow Through the Chamber.

KD Drainage installed new benching within the manhole chamber to rectify the defective section.

Rather than repeatedly clearing tissue from the same problem area, the repair addressed the physical feature that was causing material to catch.

Correcting the benching created a cleaner route around the drainage channel and removed the poorly formed area responsible for the restriction.

This is a good example of why recurring blocked drains sometimes need more than straightforward clearance.

Recurring Blockages
