Cesspit Installation
The Right Off-Mains System Starts With the Right Assessment.
If a property cannot connect to a conventional mains sewer, an alternative wastewater system may be required. Depending on the site and how the property will be used, that could be a cesspit, septic tank or sewage treatment plant.
KD Drainage provides design, installation, replacement and maintenance support for private drainage systems across Kent, London and surrounding areas.
Before recommending a solution, the site, drainage layout and intended use need to be understood properly. That may include physical inspection, CCTV drain surveys and other site investigations where appropriate.
Where another type of system is more suitable, we can also advise on septic tank installation and sewage treatment plants.

Choosing the System
A Cesspit Isn’t Automatically the Right Answer for Every Property.
A cesspit is a sealed storage tank with no treatment outlet. All wastewater entering the system remains inside until it is professionally emptied.
That can make it suitable for certain sites, but the ongoing need for waste collection means it should be considered alongside other off-mains options.
A septic tank or sewage treatment plant works differently and may be more appropriate depending on the property, ground conditions, available space and intended use.
Our engineers can help assess the site and explain the practical differences before installation work begins.
Our Installation Process
From Site Assessment to Completed Installation.
Every site is different, so the installation should be planned around the property, existing drainage and long-term wastewater requirements.
01
Assess
Review the property, access, existing drainage and intended wastewater demand.
02
Specify
Determine the most appropriate type and capacity of off-mains drainage system.
03
Install
Complete excavation, positioning, connection and installation in line with the agreed project specification.
04
Maintain
Plan regular emptying, inspection and maintenance to keep the system working correctly.
Cesspit Maintenance & Repairs
Installation Is Only the Start of the System’s Life.
Once installed, a cesspit needs regular attention because every litre of wastewater entering the tank remains there until it is removed.
KD Drainage can inspect the condition of the tank, access covers and connected drainage and identify defects before they develop into larger problems.
Where associated pipework is causing recurring drainage problems, a CCTV inspection can help identify cracks, restrictions, damaged joints or other defects.
If repairs are required elsewhere within the drainage system, our wider drain repair services can also be used as part of the remedial work.
Cesspit, Septic Tank or Treatment Plant?
Understand the Long-Term Difference Before You Install.
Cesspit: stores all wastewater in a sealed tank and requires regular professional emptying.
Septic tank: separates solids and partially treats wastewater before liquid effluent passes onward through a suitable drainage arrangement.
Sewage treatment plant: provides a more advanced treatment process and may suit sites where a higher level of wastewater treatment is required.
The best option depends on the site rather than simply choosing one technology in isolation.
Explore our dedicated septic tank installation and sewage treatment plant services if you are comparing alternatives.
Existing Cesspit?
Regular Emptying Protects the System and the Property.
Because a cesspit has no treatment outlet, the contents must be removed before the tank reaches capacity.
The right schedule depends on tank size, property occupancy and wastewater usage.
For routine or emergency waste removal, see our dedicated cesspit emptying service.
Good Cesspit Practice
Simple maintenance helps avoid bigger problems.
✓ Arrange emptying before the tank reaches capacity
✓ Inspect covers and access points periodically
✓ Investigate unexplained increases in filling frequency
✓ Avoid flushing wipes and inappropriate waste
✓ Deal with leaks or drainage faults promptly
