University College of London – 100mm Cast Iron Stack Pipe Replacement

The Project

Replacing Corroded Cast Iron Pipework Within an Occupied Commercial Building.

KD Drainage attended University College London to replace a section of 100mm cast iron stack pipe running between the fourth and third floors of the building.

The existing stack had deteriorated through corrosion and there was also damage around the access cap, meaning the affected section needed to be removed and replaced.

Because the pipework was located behind an existing brick wall, our engineers first had to create suitable access before the defective cast iron section could be removed.

Once the replacement drainage work had been completed, the area was ready for the follow-on reinstatement work and installation of the new sanitary fittings.

The Challenge

Corrosion and Damage Within Concealed Stack Pipework.

Cast iron is a durable drainage material, but older installations can eventually suffer from corrosion and deterioration.

In this case, the affected 100mm stack ran vertically between two floors and was concealed behind brickwork, making access a key part of the repair.

The damaged access cap and deteriorating pipework meant simply repairing the visible area would not provide the required solution.

The defective section therefore needed to be exposed, removed and replaced before the building could move on to the reinstatement stage.

Our Solution

Careful Access, Removal and Replacement of the Defective Stack.

Our engineers created access to the concealed stack by carefully removing the necessary section of brickwork.

Once exposed, the deteriorated cast iron section could be assessed and removed before the replacement 100mm stack pipework was installed.

The replacement restored the integrity of this section of the building’s drainage system and removed the corroded pipework that had caused concern.

The completed drainage work then left the area ready for the walls to be reinstated and the new toilets installed as part of the subsequent works.
